WHAT A BOUNDER! CHEAT AND CAD! MONSTER MONDAY : PAUL KEMPT

#MONSTERMONDAY! If I may borrow from the late, Terry-Thomas, What A Bounder! Paul Kempt, assistant to Cushing's Baron in Hammer films, #thecurseoffrankenstein. At the Baron's hour of need, just minutes away from the guillotine, he begs for his friends help.... Cushing pulls out the stops in his emotional pleading . It's a cracking scene, made all the more powerful by Paul's cold stand off behavior. Should he have helped the his friend, Frankenstein?? What a monster! You DECIDE . . .

AROUND THE 48 SECOND MARK, Cushing applies quite a clever technique... for just a second, he looks at the camera, deliberately. He breaks, THE FOURTH WALL, in order to connect with the viewer. It's pretty neat, and something I had not noticed before today, while looking at the clip. If you take a look at a similar scene at the end of his performance as Winston Smith in the BBC 1984 (1954), he does it there too, to brilliant effect.

(THE FOURTH WALL is a theatrical term for the imaginary “wall” that exists between actors on stage and the audience. ... The same effect often occurs in movies, only the fourth wall in that instance is a camera lens.)

#MONSTERMONDAY! ANOTHER VINTAGE CUSHING AUTOGRAPH COMPETITION!

#GETTHECUSHIONITSCUSHINGSUNDAY! There were SO MANY entries last week when I did THE GHOUL autographed photograph prize... we had to have another go 🙂 THIS IS OPEN TO ANYONE . . GOOD LUCK EVERYONE. The DRAW will be SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 3rd 🙂 - Marcus

Peter Cushing as Major Holly and Bernard Cribbins as his foot man, Job in #Hammerfilms 'SHE' (1965)

Christopher Lee as Billali and John Richardson Leo, fight to the death
in #Hammerfilms 'SHE' (1965)

CUSHING'S MAJOR HOLLY inspects an ancient seal on a ring. Note how Cushing uses his left hand. For most of his adult life, the thumb of his left hand was missing a third of its nail! It wasn't unsightly, but PC did have a 'thing' about his hands and fingers when working. White gloves when smoking? See how often on screen, PC actually keeps this thumb away from the 'see-all' camera. It's thought that he started using his white smoking glove, just after making Hammer films, Dracula / Horror of Dracula in 1958. Next time you watch the film, take a look at the fingers on PC's left hand... clearly stained from tar while smoking . . .!

HERE IS ANOTHER photograph, this time in colour from the same photo session as the pic in our competition. It's interesting that Peter Cushing more often than  not, grew his own facial hair when playing a role that required that he wear a mustache or beard. This wasn't out of choice, but because he had a skin sensitivity to the glue or gum that was used by make up artists, to secure the hair!

#MONSTERMONDAY : THE TERRIBLE TWINS!

#MONSTERMONDAY, The age ol story of 'good twin, bad twin' worked very nicely in #hammerfilms 'Twins of Evil' and Cushing a rare opportunity to tackle a female 'monster' for a change. Yes, there had been plenty of female vampires, but the cunning 'deadly beauty' and the is she or isn't the evil twin, added another string to plot. Also Maria and Frieda, were the nieces of 'man of God on a mission' Gustav Weil played with much pathos by Cushing.

IT'S A SHAME that the Collinson twins didn't get more opportunities with Hammer, but like the character in the film, come the end...they got the CHOP!

#MONSTERMONDAY: GUESS WHO AND CUSHING INTERVIEW

#MONSTERMONDAY: AND SO we present this week's #MONSTERMONDAY and our next candidate to fit the bill of 'Is THIS this most terrifying 'Monster / Creature' encountered in his work...' YOU decide 🙂 Below is a GREAT short and sweet interview with Peter about playing #DOCTORWHO. It seems Cushing did enjoy playing Dr Who, though as always and here, he is thinking about what his 'public' wanted to see him appearing in. As Cushing says in his motto, 'We are pleased to serve, and serve to please' in regarding an actors life. Very surprised to also hear his opinion about the Daleks though! It's a short clip and well worth a quick listen! Btw, we have a great little treat for #TOOCOOLTUESDAY tomorrow concerning William Hartnell and Peter Cushing . . .

ROOM 101 AND MONSTERMONDAY : THEY ARE WATCHING

#MONSTERMONDAY : O'BRIEN. A MONSTER? I've pulled one from the Cushing Gallery of Rogues this week, that goes back to a time before he had even dipped a toe in the waters of 'petrifying pics'! Andre Morell's O'Brien is at the centre of the story of Orwell's classic tale of the world gone to hell in a bucket, ruled by one Big Brother, leaders and others, who use cruelty and torture as their primary method of control. O'Brien is relentless once he gets our man Winston Smith played by Cushing, strapped to a table, in order to, through torture, make Winston "perfect," and to "save" him. But such is the 'power of love' Winston proves a difficult nut to crack..'My poor friend, you are almost well!'..and so with the help of the contents of 'Room 101', O'Brien plays his last card...

'You once asked me what was in Room 101. It is there we have the means to root out the last lingering deception. What happens in Room 101, is the worst thing in the world. It varies from individual to individual. It can be death by burning, burial alive..or something quite trivial, not even fatal...In YOUR case, we both happen to know 'What The Worse Thing in the World'...happens to be....!'

WHAT FOLLOWS SHOCKED the tv audiences of the live 1954 broadcast on Sunday 12th December, and also scored the highest tv rating in the UK since Queen Elizabeth's II Coronation! But furious critics and watchdogs complained and campaigned for the second live performance of the play, a few days later to be canceled. Michael Barry head of drama at the BBC refused to concede, the broadcast went ahead and recorded for posterity.

NOTE: JUST SIX DAYS AGO, (Tuesday) the New York Times announced that ' George Orwell's famed dystopian novel of life in a totalitarian state, was suddenly No. 6 on Amazon's bestseller list. On Monday, too, the book hovered between No. 5 and No. 7 on that same bestseller list'. . . It's worth noting that this isn't the first time "1984" has seen a sales spike in recent years. The book also hit Amazon's bestseller list in 2013 after Edward Snowden revealed the extent of the National Security Agency's surveillance program.

WE AWAIT THE RELEASE of the BFI REMASTERED blu ray of Peter Cushing's BBC production of 1984, Andre Morell, O'Brien and all.. THREE times the release has been announced, three times it has been canceled. Rumors put Orwell's estate to blame, for allegedly blocking the release (??) One would have thought that the BFI would have looked into rights issues before embarking on a costly remastering? Maybe that isn't the reason at all? Anyone one would think there's a force who doesn't want us to WATCH it...for whatever reason?? Are they WATCHING us too?

FAMILY FEUD : RODERICK THE BAD??

#MONSTERMONDAY: RODERICK GRISBANE... Monster or Victim?? It can get pretty lonely locked up in a attic room for a few decades. Enough to drive any man crazy! But is that any excuse to go on the rampage??? YOU decide!

DESPITE WHAT YOU  may have heard or read from others, House of the Long Shadows, is a keeper. Plagued by the opinions of over optimist 'fans', the film is, what is. A one off gathering of four actors, now past the top of their game, but giving their all. For those expecting table leaping, fast chases and gore galore, you need to take a long look at the budget and the collective ages of the veterans at work here. What you do get is the reworking of an old tale. It's the old dark house, seven keys to baldpate... starring the very best. All four, Lee, Cushing, Price and Carradine, get their moment, their entrance and some pithy dialogue. Personally for me, it was the crowning cherry on the top of Cushing career cake! If you were expecting more, you've forgotten the roots from where our midnight horrors sprang from.. tight budgets, rushed schedules and cranked up drama... producers parameters set in stone and from such materials our beloved fantasy classics were hued... so get over yourself.

A FAN BOY I MAYBE, but my life would have been 102 mins the poorer had House of the Long Shadows not been produced, and for just this one time, bring my four fav terror theps together . . . and for that one reason alone, it puts the gripes in... the shadows!
